11th Street Cottages reimagines higher-density residential living by placing landscape at the center of the neighborhood experience. Located within the Boston Mountain Ecoregion, the development demonstrates how native planting, shared gardens, and thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces can foster both ecological health and a strong sense of community.
Dense planting areas and living fences provide privacy for the residences given the tight clustered layout of the neighborhood. This design creates a cohesive landscape that feels intentionally designed with both the individual residents and the community in mind.
The central courtyard as well as the shared garden spaces serve as the heart of the 11th Street Cottage community. While they are tucked away between the homes of this cottage community, they are open for the public to enjoy as well as residents. The individual mirco-yards, along with the accessible garden spaces, encourages outdoor living for residents while simultaneously encouraging long-term sustainability and stewardship of the community.
The landscape was informed by the site's existing ecology, beginning with soil analysis and a planting palette composed of nearly 90 percent native species. This plan includes edible native plants in the gardens and because of the team’s determination to prioritize the landscape from the earliest stages of design, they invited Native Restoration and Management, an EDG sister company committed to the stewardship of native landscapes, to manage the property and ensure the longevity of the project.
11th Street Cottages offers a glimpse into a future where living in a compact residential development turns into a neighborhood experience where ecology, community, and daily life are thoughtfully intertwined.
