cological Design Group is an Arkansas-based design firm and corporation of landscape architects and civil engineers that was founded by Martin Smith and Tanner Weeks in 2008. Since then, we’ve stayed true to our mission to pioneer resilient design by blending landscape architecture, civil engineering, and experiential programming to create environments that are beautiful, sustainable, and community-focused.
Today, EDG is a multidisciplinary firm comprised of landscape architects, designers, civil engineers, biological engineers, urban designers, and outdoor recreation specialists. This collaboration of disciplines and creative perspectives allows us to create a unique sense of place.
To us, it’s not enough to just build outdoor spaces. They must be thoughtfully designed and actively programmed to spark curiosity, learning, and stewardship. We want every visitor to walk away inspired to protect and care for the natural world. Ultimately, we hope to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards, those who will carry forward our mission and expand our impact. That’s the legacy we’re building, project by project.
Over the past century, our natural ecological systems have been fragmented due to development and the introduction of industrial agriculture. The seamless connectivity from one system to another no longer exists and has been replaced by sterile environments requiring an abundance of energy and natural resources to maintain.
Our designs utilize one of our greatest natural resources “water” as a common thread for existence regarding all life. With the incorporation of storm water driving site design along with the principles of ecology, our outdoor spaces are responsible environments with a safe, functional and appealing public aesthetic.
Our projects foster healthy, balanced relationships between people and their environment while adapting to change over time and requiring only minimal and economical maintenance.
EDG collaborates with other disciplines to generate design solutions that integrate the site with the architecture. We study each site and its ecology, and produce designs that improve the built environment and function responsibly; reflective of the natural environment.
These designs are achieved through the use of low-impact development and sustainable design techniques that are ecologically based and sensitive to local conditions. EDG is dedicated to developing environmentally responsible infrastructure that has multiple functions, is sustainable, and minimizes impact to the natural hydrology and aesthetic of the site.
We're also committed to the creation of cost effective and low maintenance designs that are not only environmentally sustainable, but are financially responsible for the owner and end user.
