Underwood Park

EDG’s role in designing the Underwood Park Master Plan involved extensive research and analysis. Site analysis began with a comprehensive inventory of the site’s hydrologic, ecological, and cultural conditions to guide our planning. Key challenges due to rapid development in the surrounding area included addressing flooding, impermeability, and non-point source pollution. The design incorporated green infrastructure solutions such as restoring wetlands, enhancing vegetated meanders along Clabber Creek, and using permeable pavers and bioswales in parking areas to manage stormwater effectively.

Engaging with the local community was crucial to the success of the master planning process because the park is intended to be a communal space where residents can play and connect. EDG sought input from Fayetteville residents to align the park’s program and features with the community's needs and preferences. During three public input sessions, EDG, in collaboration with the City of Fayetteville’s Parks and Recreation Department, gathered feedback on programming, themes, and park layout.

The first session focused on gathering ideas for park programming, with top requests including nature trails, playgrounds, walking/jogging paths, open green spaces, and ecological restoration areas. In the second session, residents reviewed three park themes: nature immersion, play and social, and active living. All three themes garnered a similar percentage of votes, and designers were tasked to merge the three themes into the final master plan.

During the third session, EDG presented a draft master plan integrating nature, play, and active living themes. This plan included ecological restoration areas, pickleball courts, a dog park, paddleboard access, playground, a bird-watching blind, and hammock areas. The final public session allowed for review and discussion of the master plan, which was refined based on community feedback.

The design draws inspiration from the creek's historic meanders and incorporates prairie ecosystem elements, such as mima mounds and nature play areas. The approved master plan features a design that reconnects Clabber Creek to a historic oxbow meander through wetlands, enhancing stormwater capacity. A nature-viewing boardwalk will allow visitors to explore this restored system.

Underwood Park will contribute to the City’s green network, connecting a nature corridor for migratory species and supporting diverse habitats with native plants. The final master plan received unanimous approval, and EDG is thrilled to have contributed to creating a space that will serve and educate the Fayetteville community for years to come.
