EDG team provided landscape architecture, civil engineering, and construction administration services for the Coler Crossing Apartments, a thoughtfully designed 1.5-acre development situated within the Ozark Mountain Ecoregion. This project transforms the site into a vibrant 60-unit walk-up apartment complex featuring an outdoor courtyard and approximately 1,000 square feet of commercial space.
Located just one mile east of Coler Mountain Bike Preserve, Coler Crossing offers residents direct access to the renowned trail system via protected bike lanes along Third Street in Bentonville Arkansas. This strategic placement fosters an active, community-oriented lifestyle that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding urban and natural environments.
The defining feature of Coler Crossing is its commitment to sustainable site design. The planting plan centers around a bioswale filled with sea oats and sycamore, contributing to effective stormwater management. Native river stone and sandstone blocks were strategically incorporated throughout the site to enhance the natural aesthetic while supporting erosion control. Coler Crossing was also developed on land where the previous conditions were almost entirely impervious. Our design significantly increased greenspace, thereby reducing peak stormwater runoff rates without requiring detention.
The complex also hosts a restaurant and patio space located at the northwest corner of the site. Designed to draw people into the development, this space serves as a lively community hub. Additionally, the integration of striking murals on the multifamily building and retaining walls adds visual interest and strengthens the site’s identity along busy N Walton Rd.
Ample bike parking and the prime location along the bike path make the café a natural gathering space for cyclists traveling to and from Coler Preserve. This thoughtful integration of residential, commercial, and recreational elements establishes Coler Crossing as a model for mixed-use development where the community places a clear importance on accessibility and outdoor recreation.
