Lake Conway

This Master Plan for Lake Conway Urban Natural Area addresses significant hydrological challenges in the northern region of the lake, influenced by a watershed that encompasses both developed urban zones and agricultural land. This watershed has experienced considerable compromise, resulting in increased runoff and pollution from tributaries. As urban development intensifies and impervious surfaces expand, effective stormwater management becomes imperative. The Master Plan incorporates sustainable design strategies to mitigate these impacts, including advanced stormwater management systems, green infrastructure for natural filtration, and buffer zones to safeguard the lake.

A key focus of the plan is the enhancement of water quality, which is essential for both ecological health and recreational enjoyment. Improved water quality will create clean and inviting waters for activities such as fishing and kayaking, while addressing issues such as suspended sediment and hypereutrophication that threaten aquatic life. The implementation of strategies such as buffer zones with native vegetation and constructed wetlands will facilitate the filtration of runoff and support biodiversity, fostering a vibrant recreational space that encourages community engagement.

Additionally, the plan proposes an extension of the Connect Conway Active Transportation Plan, creating a loop that provides direct access to the recreational area. This initiative aims to promote mobility and healthy lifestyles while strengthening community connections. Built upon three key strategies—Urban Wilderness, Recreation, and Restoration—the plan emphasizes the preservation of natural landscapes, the development of diverse recreational opportunities, and the rehabilitation of degraded areas.

Spanning approximately 10 miles, the trail network would feature a variety of pathways, including soft surface trails, paved multi-use trails, and water trails for kayaking. Two recreation hubs would be established to provide community gathering spaces and experiential learning opportunities while providing access locations to the proposed urban water trail. This Master Plan represents a significant investment in the community, with anticipated benefits that extend beyond initial costs. With support from donors and grants, the project aims to enhance ecological education, outdoor recreation, and tourism, positioning Lake Conway as a premier outdoor destination. A phased implementation approach will prioritize essential construction elements, ensuring immediate community impact while accommodating future enhancements. Ultimately, this strategy will transform Lake Conway into a thriving natural asset, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike.
